Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Policeman's best friend did it again! K9 Officer Nikki helped with a suspicious vehicle stop. Officer Nikki alerted her human partner to the car where officers subsequently found "approximately 26.9 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, and packaging materials." Thanks, in part, to Officer Nikki, an arrest was made. Nice work, officer! (Concord Police K9 Association via Facebook)
  2. A Moraga teacher won the opportunity to go to Antarctica! While that doesn't sound like the chance of a lifetime to this California girl, it sure did to Saklan School teacher Victoria Obenchain. On her third try for the program, Obenchain was selected as one of only 50 teachers to receive the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship from Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. Not only that, she landed her first-choice destination of Antarctica. "I was so excited, I cried while I was telling my mom. I felt really lucky to be chosen," she said. (lamorindaweekly.com)
  3. A quilt hangs outside the Orinda Library for all to admire. It was made by a local artisan. Here's the thing... This quilter is only 12 years old! "Ava is wonderful to work with. She is very thoughtful in her fabric choices and precise in her stitching," said her quilt instructor, Jennifer McCullough. According to her mom, Ava is now working on her second quilt, featuring a panel that was handcrafted by an indigenous Panamanian artist. Through her work, Ava wants to bring awareness of climate change. I'd say Ava's got the world by the tail. (The Orinda News)
  4. Thirty-six vehicles were reportedly broken into overnight Friday night in the Ellinwood neighborhood of Pleasant Hill. Pleasant Hill police have not yet commented on the alleged burglaries. (Claycord.com)
  5. The Workforce Development Program at St. Vincent de Paul is getting ready to start its next session. This program helps people "develop the personal tools they will need to find and keep a good job." Interested applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be willing and able to attend two introductory sessions. (Antioch Herald)
