Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- A Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesperson said Sunday the district anticipates "several more days" of flooding near Bay Point and Pittsburg in an attempt to extinguish the Marsh Fire, which has burned since May. Con Fire tweeted Sunday afternoon that approximately 20,000 gallons per minute are flowing on the site, thanks to the owner pumping water from the Delta and Contra Costa Water District, diverting water at Mallard Slough. The effort started Friday. (Patch)
- Mount Diablo State Park had 30 bike turnouts installed on its roadways on Monday. "This has truly been a team effort by thousands of people throughout the Bay Area, and I can't thank you enough," said Alan Kalin, president of the cyclist group Mount Diablo Cyclists, in a video announcement. Bikes make up 60% of vehicle traffic on the mountain. The state park installed three pilot bike turnouts, which Mount Diablo Cyclists said were "overwhelmingly successful" in reducing bike-car collisions. The effort now is to put in a turnout every half mile. (Patch)
- Folks in England are now talking about the city of Clayton! Clayton's Kara Kohler won The Princess Royal Challenge Cup this month on the River Thames winning her first international gold medal in single sculls. Next up for her? She'll team up with Sophia Vitas to represent the U.S. at the World Rowing Championships Sept. 18-25 in Racice, Czech Republic. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Forty cases have been dismissed from prosecution in Pittsburg and Antioch as several officers are under investigation due to allegations against them involving a range of offenses which constitute crimes of moral turpitude. "The DA's office is involved in ongoing evaluations of the [officers'] cases to determine if the cases are compromised due to the criminal wrongdoing and misconduct," he stated. "Those 40 have been compromised to the point they can't be salvaged so they were dismissed." (Antioch Herald)
- The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a fire in the area of Golf Course Road and W Leland in the city of Pittsburg Sunday night. The fire burned approximately 11 acres before it was brought under control, according to the fire district. No injuries were reported. (East County Today)
