- The Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District has found more mosquitos with West Nile. This time they're in Brentwood. Get rid of standing water and scrub any containers that had standing water to get rid of any larvae that are clinging to the sides. Keep outdoor containers dry. Report any mosquito activity by calling (925) 685-9301 or online. (EastCountyToday)
- If you're reading this, you can change a life. The Diablo Valley Literacy Council is looking for English tutors for adults learning English as a second language. You can help these adults gain confidence, get better jobs and help their children in school. There are two sessions scheduled for potential tutors. You must attend both sessions. The first happens Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The second session is scheduled for Saturday, September 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at Good Shepherd Church. (Pioneer Publishers)
- A new firehouse is ready to house firefighters in Bay Point. Officials announced completion of the firehouse adjacent to the Highway 4 interchange at Willow Pass Road. The station was completed several months ahead of schedule at a total cost of $13 million. "Today culminates a years-long project to deliver a much-needed new Fire Station 86 to both our residents and our firefighters who serve them from it," said Lewis Broschard, fire chief, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. "Strategically located on the busy Highway 4 corridor and built with versatility and safety in mind, Fire Station 86 is uniquely suited to serving both groups." (East County Today)
- The Moraga Chamber of Commerce has named Bay Area Ballplayers as the town's Business of the Year, and Joy In Motion as the Nonprofit of the Year. The goal of Bay Area Ballplayers is to "instill in the next generation the tools and skills that would help them reach their potential." They have a great multi-purpose space that includes baseball and lacrosse training, adult fitness classes, birthday parties, a 22,500 square-foot artificial turf field, batting cages, portable baseball backstop, lacrosse goals, and portable medicine ball wall. Joy in Motion is a non-profit dance studio. "Most community theaters and dance studios are a service to the community," explained owner Linda Craig. "That's how we approach dance."
