Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- With the annexation of East Contra Costa Fire, Con Fire has announced a new organizational structure and commensurate promotions. These promotions include instating the district's first female assistant chief, "of which I am particularly proud," said Lewis Broschard, fire chief, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. According to East County Today "Con Fire now serves a population of more than 750,000 residents across 553 square miles, six and 45 percent increases, respectively. It delivers fire and EMS in 11 cities and 10 unincorporated areas with nearly 500 employees staffing 30 fire stations with 33 daily on-duty crews." (EastCountyToday)
- Nomination papers for seats on the Concord City Council in Districts 1, 3, and 5 are now available by appointment. To be eligible to run for City Council, a candidate must be a resident of Concord and a registered voter in the District of the office sought at the time nomination papers are issued. The office of Treasurer is also open and nomination papers are available by appointment. The Treasurer is an at-large position, and a candidate must be a resident of Concord and a registered voter at the time nomination papers are issued. (Claycord.com)
- Those darned mosquitos can ruin any great outdoor event and they can be a health hazard. They are especially bad at the Martinez waterfront this year. Because of that, Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District was out with truck-mounted, ultra-low volume sprayers to control adult mosquitoes along the waterfront on Thursday morning. The insecticide being used was Zenivex E4 RTU. (Claycord.com)
- From the Office of the District Attorney: "The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office filed a felony assault charge with two enhancements against a former Richmond Police Department Officer. Eric Smith, Jr., 28, faces one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon for an incident that occurred while Officer Smith was on duty. Eric Smith Jr. is further charged with enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury and for the use of a deadly and dangerous weapon." Officer Smith is accused of using his taser during a traffic stop to inflict great bodily injury upon the driver of the vehicle, Saul Mendoza Jr. (News 24/680)
- Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA-03), Josh Harder (D-CA-10), Jerry McNerney (D-CA-09), and Mike Thompson (D-CA-05) issued a statement urging Governor Newsom to cancel the planned construction of the tunnel under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The congressmen believe the tunnel would cause irreparable damage to the Delta without creating the promised water solution for California. "California must invest in a water solution for all of California that prioritizes recycling, conservation, and the creation of new storage systems instead of a plan that will destroy the Delta," the representatives said in their statement.
