Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. John Gioia and Federal D. Glover were sworn in as the chairman and vice chair, respectively, of the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors. Ken Carlson was also sworn in as a supervisor for District 4, replacing retiring Supervisor Karen Mitchoff. Carlson wrote on Facebook, "On Monday, Rep. Mark DeSaulnier administered my oath of office, which officially starts my term on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. I am proud and humbled to have been elected to represent the communities of Pleasant Hill, Clayton, Concord, and Walnut Creek." (Antioch Herald)
  2. The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office issued a final report on the in-custody death of Arturo Gomez Calel in Antioch in 2021. The report finds that the use of force by the Antioch Police Department was lawful. "In its legal analysis, the District Attorney's Office concluded that, given the totality of facts in this incident, the use of force by Antioch Police Officers was lawful and permitted pursuant to California Penal Code sections 835, 835a, 835a(a)(4), and 835a(b)." No further action will be taken in this case. (Claycord.com)
  3. Two would-be robbers were thwarted by Walnut Creek Police on Thursday. The duo had allegedly stolen some merchandise from the Walnut Creek Nordstrom's and made their getaway in a small car, which store security personnel tailed while police responded. The two suspects were taken into custody without incident. (News 24/680)
  4. If you live in or near the Town of Danville, you may be wondering which creeks homeowners are responsible for maintaining and which are publicly maintained. "Contra Costa County Public Works Department [has] developed a guideline map to show the local creek system and maintenance responsibility. The county has developed a website to guide homeowners on maintaining private creeks: contracosta.ca.gov/5754. " (danville.ca.gov)

  • "Pleasant Hill residents are being encouraged to apply for a seat on the City Council after a councilmember was elected in November to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. Applications for the council seat will be accepted through noon on Jan. 27 to replace Ken Carlson, who was elected as supervisor to represent the county's District 4." (Claycord.com)
