Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. East Contra Costa may be getting a new highway. A proposal is on the table for a new highway that would connect Highway 4 either to 580 in Alameda County or 205 in San Joaquin County to support commuter traffic flow. Public comment is being accepted through January 18. (Patch)
  2. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors said goodbye to its longtime chair, Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, on Tuesday. Mitchoff was first elected to the board in 2010. She was a well- respected supervisor, with a reputation of cutting through bureaucracy. "Mitchoff said she plans to spend time exercising, traveling to national parks, and will adopt a dog." (Patch)
  3. Antioch resident Bianca Palomera received a key to the city on Tuesday evening from Mayor Lamar Thorpe, "in recognition of a courageous, selfless and extraordinary act of heroism." The 19-year-old was protecting an individual with an intellectual disability at her job at Habit Burger when a bullying patron began to punch Palomera in the face multiple times. Palomera lost her right eye as a result of the incident. The suspect was arrested last week. (Antioch Herald)
  4. Late Tuesday morning, CHP was alerted to a wrong-way driver on Highway 4 near Pittsburg. The ensuing wreck involved four vehicles, including a big rig. The driver of the car hit by the wrong-way driver lost their life in the collision. The wrong-way driver was ultimately taken into custody by Pittsburg Police. Drugs and/or alcohol is suspected. (Concord Patch)
  5. Danville Police are searching for a final suspect in a strong-arm robbery that took place Tuesday night. Two other suspects were located. (Claycord.com)
