Here are the top four stories today in Concord:
- One person was killed and three were injured in an early-morning shooting at a Brentwood gym on Thursday, police said. At 1:55 a.m., officers from the Brentwood Police Department responded to a 24 Hour Fitness gym on Lone Tree Way after reports of a shooting. According to police, a fight broke out on or around the gym's basketball court and moved its way to the gym's parking lot, where at least two people opened fire, based on surveillance footage. One man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. The three others brought themselves to hospitals. (Patch)
- Governor Newsom visited the water treatment plant in Antioch on Thursday and had a taste of its wares. Apparently, the water met with his approval. The governor was at the plant to unveil his plan to help California deal with drought issues brought about by the worst drought in 1,200 years. Plans, he said, include more water treatment plants for sea water and brackish water such as is being treated at the plant in Antioch, along with more creative conservation efforts. He also wants to streamline the process to get approvals for more water treatment plants. ""The time to get these damn projects is ridiculous; It's absurd. It's reasonably comedic," Newsom said. "In so many ways the world we invented from an environmental perspective is now getting in the way of moving these projects forward." (East County Today)
- If you've got a Rolex, don't wear it to Walnut Creek. You're apt to have it stolen by one of the many Rolex thieves in the area. But there are fewer of those thieves on the streets today thanks to the arrest of two from Richmond. A couple of accused thieves attempted to abscond with a man's Rolex on Ygnacio Valley Road on Thursday. They pistol whipped the victim, but were thwarted as they tried to get away. Shaune Rogers, 34, and David Lopez, 33, both from Richmond, were apprehended by a team of helicopter and ground police. Initial charges for the pair include robbery, assault with a deadly weapon (firearm), felon in possession of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle) and felony conspiracy. (News 24/680)
- There's more drama in the effort to recall Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe. Per The Antioch Herald, according to Antioch City Clerk Ellie Householder, as of Tuesday, August 9 at 5 p.m. the Committee to Recall Mayor Lamar Thorpe, who claims they were ripped off in the amount of $23,000 and all the estimated 11,000 signatures, has not submitted their [required] 460 [financial] reports." The reports were due on August 1. Recall organizers are blaming everything from COVID to overwork for their delinquency. (Antioch Herald)
