Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- The Concord City Council started looking for a developer for the old Naval Weapons Station again this week. It's the third time the council went back to the drawing board. This time, council members agreed to draft a questionnaire for all interested parties. The members also agreed to finalize questions by the end of April and then will invite selected developers to participate in the process. Several developers have signaled interest. (The Mercury News)
- Are you interested in making recommendations that may result in new policies for our city? If so, District 5 Supervisor Federal Glover wants you to apply to one of the many county commissions and boards that have seats available. Opportunities exist on boards that range from the Assessment Appeals Board to the Western CC Transit Authority Board. Check them out and find out how to apply in this article from Claycord.com
- We're no longer in a drought, Concord! The U.S. Drought Monitor released a report that showed Contra Costa County out of drought territory. Most parts of the Bay Area have emerged from the drought designation. I almost forgot how great it was to be all wet! (Pioneer Publishers)
- The Terraces of Lafayette development will go forward. The California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the city and the developer, O'Brien Land Company. "The Courts have once again affirmed that the City complied with the Housing Accountability Act and the California Environmental Quality Act in its environmental review and approval of this 20%-affordable housing project. The litigation is over, and we should now focus on welcoming new residents to our community," said Lafayette Mayor Carl Anduri. (News 24/680)
- The Contra Costa County chapter of Guitars Not Guns graduated its latest class, consisting of eight students. The students were all gifted the guitars they learned to play in this program. "Guitars Not Guns has been teaching guitar to foster children and at-risk youth in a classroom setting with qualified teachers as an alternative to violence for 23 years. Nearly 5,000 students across 12 states have been served." Congratulations to the graduates! (Contra Costa News)
Today in Concord:
- Enjoy the best produce of the season by shopping at the Walnut Creek Farmers' Market! (9:00 AM)
- Head over to Forrest Home Farms in San Ramon for Free Fun on the Farm! "These Saturday events are an opportunity to step back into history and enjoy the simple things of life." (11:00 AM)
- "Every week we sample wines from all over the world" at Wines of the World Tasting at Vinous Reverie in Walnut Creek. (1:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- The new exhibit "Life in Clayton 1850-1870" at the Clayton Museum is all about ordinary people doing ordinary things, back in the day. "I did the research and tried to find things that probably would have existed back then. For instance, I made a cloth doll in the style of what an 1860s mother would make for her daughter," said curator Nancy Niemeyer. The museum is open Wed. and Sun., 2-4 p.m. at 6101 Main St., Clayton. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Head over to the Ygnacio Valley Library "as we celebrate the debut of Kara Navolio's new children's picture book, Maggie Discovers the Rainbow! Come meet the author, enjoy refreshments, hear storytime, try an art project, and pose for the photo booth!" The event takes place March 25.
- Little ones can have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny at the Sunvalley Mall — and by "little ones" I mean the four-legged kind! Capture the memories with your cute pooch posing with the star of the season!
