Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Certified Farmers Market week is coming up and our neighbors in Martinez are looking forward to grape season! They also want you to know what it means to be a "certified" farmers market. According to the Martinez Tribune, "In short, it means that the produce is delivered to the market directly from the farm and from the growers themselves. In California, only California-grown produce may be certified for sale in our state's farmers markets." So, what kinds of grapes are you apt to find in farmers markets from Martinez to Concord to Benicia? "Red Flame, Autumn Royal, Concord seeded, Pearl, Princess, Red Globe, and many others." Yum! (Martinez Tribune)
- Did you see smoke from the Oak Fire in Mariposa County near Yosemite drift into our skies on Monday? The district said the smoke was expected to remain high so it may not have looked smoky, but the skies were hazy, and the smell of smoke permeated the higher elevations. Worried about the air quality? The air quality index can be checked at https://fire.airnow.gov/. (Claycord.com)
- Using data from Niche 2020 rankings, which were based on the number of retirees in any given area, weather, access to health care, restaurants and other amenities, crime rates and entertainment options, The Stacker published a list of the 50 best places to retire on the West Coast. Orinda, Walnut Creek and Alamo all made the list. (Pioneer Publishers)
- A vehicle crashed and overturned in the creek bed not far from the 4800 block of Leon Drive in Clayton on Sunday. Though there was water in the creekbed it was not a threat to the driver or the emergency effort to rescue him. He was extricated from his car and taken to John Muir Hospital. The extent of his injuries was unknown. (News 24/680)
- According to the Contra Costa Herald "Contra Costa residents will be able to take a deeply discounted special event train to the "Battle of the Bay" baseball game between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants on Sunday, August 7th." Any tickets purchased for the Amtrak San Joaquins with a destination of the Oakland Coliseum will automatically receive a 50% discount. The route has been modified for the day to accommodate the riders for the game. Go A's! (Just sayin') (Contra Costa Herald)
