Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Good news, Concord! There were no arrests made at the DUI checkpoint on Friday night. The checkpoint was held at Willow Pass Road and Mount Diablo Street from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. and 314 vehicles were contacted by officers. Cops don't really want to make arrests at these things. They want to educate and deter people from getting behind the wheel in the first place. Seems like this one was a screaming success! (Claycord.com)
  2. Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard issued an official statement about the fatal officer involved shooting there on Thursday night. Officers had responded to a domestic violence situation on Teresa Lane. "The suspect chose to drive the direction of what played out when he could have taken several different avenues to deal with whatever angst he had going on in his life. He also could have given up upon our officers making contact with him," the chief said. Instead, the suspect pulled out a gun. The suspect who was fatally shot was identified as Frank Anthony Correa, a 58-year-old male and resident of Oakley. The Oakley Police Department is requesting information from anybody who may know anything about this investigation to call us at 925-625-8060 or email us at opdtips@ci.oakley.ca.us (East County Today)
  3. On Sept. 11, 1972, BART opened for service along the first 28-mile section of track from the MacArthur Station to Fremont. It hosted dignitaries on that first day and 16 days later, President Richard Nixon visited the Bay Area to "marvel at the future of transportation," according to the Nixon Foundation. BART will hold its golden anniversary celebration on Saturday September 10 at the Lake Merritt Station. The public is invited to help celebrate. The 50th Birthday Party and Family Fun Festival is free to the public, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will include food trucks, music, games, prizes and a time capsule opening. For the month of September, BART is also offering 50% off fares, including already discounted fares. (The Orinda News)
  4. There are four candidates in the running for Walnut Creek City Council. Two are incumbents one of whom is the sitting Mayor. The other two are an attorney and a manager at a non-profit. Read their official statements in this article from Walnut Creek Magazine. (Walnut Creek Magazine)
