Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Mayor Dominic Aliano is running unopposed in the district 3 City Council election. The other incumbents that are up for re-election are facing opponents for their districts, including District 1, incumbent Laura Hoffmeister. Hoffmeister who is the vice mayor and has been on the Concord City Council for 25 years, was arrested in May for DUI after being pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the road on Pine Hollow Road. The office of treasurer is also up for re-election this year, and incumbent Patti Barsotti is facing challenger D'Marco Anthony. See all of the candidates who qualified for the run in this article from Claycord.com. (Claycord.com)
  2. Eli Vu of Concord graduated from Clayton Valley Charter in June. He was probably the only college graduate on the stage at the Concord Pavillion that night. What? That's right. Vu had taken classes at DVC while taking his high school classes, and he earned not one, but 4 associates degrees which were conferred in May! He's been accepted at UC Davis and will start there in the fall. I wonder if he'll get is PhD before he gets his undergrad?!? Way to go Eli! (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. People at higher risk of exposure to monkeypox can now schedule vaccination appointments online through Contra Costa Health. An increase in supply is allowing more people who are at high risk to be vaccinated and allowing Contra Costa Health to now let community members directly schedule their own appointments and skip the waiting list. "We know people are eager to get immunized against MPX and adding online scheduling will make access to the vaccine in Contra Costa a lot easier and more convenient," said Dr. Ori Tzvieli, health officer for the county. To book an appointment, go online to mpxvaccine.cchealth.org. (News 24/680)
  4. What a mess! A big rig jackknifed on southbound I-680 in Martinez on Wednesday morning causing a huge traffic snarl right at commute time. Several people were injured in the accident. Click this link to see a picture of the chaos and be very, very glad you were not there. (You were not there, were you?) (News 24/680)
  5. It was a dangerous situation in Antioch on Tuesday night when Con Fire responded to an apartment fire at the Parkview Apartments in the 2800 block of Gentrytown. When they got there, they realized that an apartment on the second floor was fully engulfed and others in the 14-unit building were threatened, so the fire went to two alarms. Within about 25 minutes the fire was extinguished with only two apartment units involved. Two other units sustained water damage. (East County Today)
