Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. A pedestrian was killed on Interstate 680 near Contra Costa Boulevard early Thursday morning. Police were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m. All lanes in the involved direction were blocked for nearly an hour. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured. "Our preliminary investigation indicates there may be an additional vehicle involved or other witnesses that have information about the events of the crash," authorities said. (Contra Costa News)
  2. From Tuesday, February 21, through Thursday, February 23, Contra Costa Public Works will be removing trees along Marsh Creek Road near Bridges 143 and 145. The area will have traffic control and some lane closures. Allow extra time if driving that route. (Claycord.com)
  3. A 19-year-old man was arrested in Orinda and found to be wanted for a homicide out of Antioch. The murder happened on January 17 outside of The Spot liquor store on Sycampre Drive. "He is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility pending arraignment and his bail was set at two million dollars." (Claycord.com)
  4. Melissa Rae of the Concord Chamber of Commerce highlights the Women's Networking Group in a letter to The Pioneer. "This group aims to empower women in business and provide them the resources they need," wrote Rae.
  5. The Contra Costa County Poetry Out Loud winner is Harper Iles, a sophomore at Pinole Valley High School in Pinole. "Poetry Out Loud is so much more than just a poetry reading," said Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey. "Studying and performing poetry in front of a live audience gives students confidence, comprehension, and life skills they will draw upon throughout a lifetime." (Contra Costa News)
