Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton continues to receive big support from her community, recently being unanimously endorsed for re-election by the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County. DA Becton, when taking office in 2017, became the first woman, as well as first African-American District Attorney in the county's history. She still remains the only African-American District Attorney in California. In response to this endorsement, DA Becton said, "I am honored to receive the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County's unanimous endorsement. (The party's) confidence in my ability to keep delivering safety, justice, and progress for the people of Contra Costa County is matched by my commitment." (People's Vanguard of Davis)
- A fire that grew to four-alarm status Saturday near the Benicia bridge, had "slowed considerably" but was still burning as of Sunday afternoon. The structure that burned was a wooden commercial pier. Benicia Fire Department Fire Chief Josh Chadwick said an assessment on the extent of damages at the Valero Benicia Refinery and Amports docks will likely occur on Monday. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. (CNN via MSN & Claycord.com)
- A suspect allegedly stole a car, drove onto southbound Interstate 680 and promptly smashed into a retaining wall, all while apparently under the influence, Pleasant Hill police said Saturday. The suspect was detained and placed under arrest on suspicion of auto theft, DUI, resisting arrest, and other crimes. (Claycord.com)
- Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) will hold a virtual town hall meeting to discuss issues around commuting. Join Mark DeSaulnier for a Town Hall on Improving Commutes to Improve Lives on Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. Several experts will join the meeting to discuss how we can reduce traffic and improve quality of life. The panel will also look at decreasing our impact on the environment by investing in infrastructure improvements and promoting telecommuting. - On Saturday, April 2, the City of Antioch held its first large-scale community event at the Antioch Historical Museum, commemorating the City's (sesquicentennial) 150th anniversary of incorporation. This event was made possible in partnership with Celebrate Antioch Foundation and the Antioch Historical Museum. Families enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of live music, folk dance, classic cars, museum tours, kid's activities, food, Antioch Recreation Bus, jump houses, educational opportunities, and more.
