Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. St. James Cathedral of Faith in Pittsburg was ransacked and burglarized over the weekend, leaving the congregation with no equipment to have church services. Pastor Maria Gardner-Langston told KPIX the criminals stole TVs, the sound system, mics, speakers, two drum sets and took the pictures off the wall. (Patch)
  2. According to a press release from the City of Concord, a public hearing was held on Wednesday May 18 for "Application for an Administrative Permit, Minor Exception, Design and Site Review and Development Agreement (PL21153 – AA, ME, DR, DA) for a 5,323 square foot cannabis storefront retail business located at 1045 Galaxy Way. " For more information on this application please contact Lorna Villa, associate planner, City of Concord Planning Division at lorna.villa@cityofconcord.org or at (925) 671-3176. (Concord Patch)
  3. There are two strong candidates running for county sheriff. They are incumbent David Livingston and Ben Therriault, an Iraqi veteran with a career in law enforcement. Two candidates are also vying for your vote for assessor. Incumbent Gus Kramer has been in the news lately as the subject of a censure and grand jury trial over alleged racism and sexual harassment. That trial ended in a mistrial and Kramer was not retried. He will go up against Floy Andrews, a relative unknown. For details about these four candidates and their respective races check out this article from Pioneer Publishers. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Just as the heat hit and you and your garden got thirsty, the Contra Costa Water District board approved a water reduction plan that has you reducing usage by 15%. CCWD's service area includes Concord, Clayton and portions of Pleasant Hill. Starting July 1, you'll have to reduce your consumption. CCWD will also hold a public hearing on June 15 to review a drought surcharge of up to 15% effective July 1. For the average customer using 260 gallons a day, it would amount to about 28 cents a day. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. Today, the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District launched its Microbusiness & Nonprofit COVID-19 Relief Grant Program, thanks to funding from the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Qualifying microbusinesses and nonprofits within Concord and Contra Costa County are eligible to apply for grants of $2,500. A microbusiness is defined as: 1) Fewer than five employees, and 2) Earning less than $50,000 per year. Eligible applicants must also have been in operation before December 1, 2019 and still in operation today. Learn how to apply at this link. (Facebook)
