Pittsburg Church Fire: Roof Collapses, Crews Battle Hotspots

Fire investigators were not able to assess the blaze for a possible cause as firefighters continued to battle hotspots.

PITTSBURG, CA — Firefighters late Friday morning were continuing to put out hotspots at the scene of a two-alarm Pittsburg church fire that broke early Friday morning.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District first responded at 2:45 a.m. Friday to the blaze at The Pentecostals of the Bay Area church at 310 Central Ave.

The building's roof partially collapsed and the blaze sent burning embers into the sky, but no other structures were damaged.

Cooler temperatures Friday morning probably helped keep the fire from spreading to other buildings, said Contra Costa Fire Protection District Capt. George Laing.

No injuries were reported in the fire. The cause remained under investigation.

"Our fire investigators have not been able to get in yet because we are still dealing with hotspots," a Con Fire spokesperson told Patch at 11 a.m. Friday.

At publication time, Con Fire expected crews would remain on scene for another 2-3 hours.

"This morning's church fire in Pittsburg resulted in significant structural collapse and unstable walls, which must be made safe before investigators can enter. Con Fire is today removing walls at risk of further collapse," Con Fire said Friday evening. "Once safe, investigation will continue."
