When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the motorist accelerated and headed into heavy commute traffic, police said. The officer called off the chase because of the motorist's erratic driving, police said.
Shortly afterward, the officer saw that the vehicle had crashed through the fence at Delta View Golf Course in the area of West Leland and Golf Club roads, according to police.

The vehicle had also struck a pedestrian who was walking along the sidewalk, although police said the officer did not witness it.
The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle, which had just one occupant, continued onto the golf course before the male driver abandoned the vehicle, police said.
Officers later located the suspect on Dover Way, several blocks from the scene of the collision. Police said he is in custody and is being interviewed by investigators. His name is not yet being released.
Pittsburg police will be investigating the case alongside the California Highway Patrol and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. No further details were provided.
West Leland Road will remain closed between Golf Course Road and Daffodil Drive for several hours, police said shortly before 10:30 a.m.
