Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- This cool new robot is like a whale for garbage! It sucks in a ton of water and filters out the yucky stuff while avoiding the bigger obstacles like marine life and boaters. Richmond will take a crack at using this "Plastics Piranha" developed by the startup Clean Earth Rovers out of the University of Cincinnati. It should clean out hundreds of pounds of garbage from the waters off our coastline. Neat! (Claycord.com)
- Lanes were closed on the Orinda side of the Caldecott tunnel on Saturday when a motorcyclist was killed in a collision there. The accident took place about 5:45 Saturday evening. All lanes had reopened by 8. (Claycord.com)
- There were a couple of things in 6-year-old Ryeson's life that "bugged" him, so he created an imaginary spider and some bug friends to help him. With the help of his mother, he turned his creative stories into children's books so everyone could learn to overcome some of the difficulties of growing up, like trying new things and tackling fears. According to The Pioneer Ryeson's mom, Shana, of Concord "found out she had cancer at the beginning of the pandemic, and painful radiation treatments kept her bed-ridden for months. She took time off from her career as a freelance wine and travel writer and marketing educator to research publishing children's books" to help her son publish the stories he was telling her about his spider friend. Ryeson's first two books were best sellers on Amazon in six different categories and his new one is sure to do as well! (Pioneer Publishers)
- Smoke from the Marsh Fire in Pittsburg and the Washburn Fire in Yosemite combined with a thick marine layer on Monday to make the air in Concord very hazy and dangerous for some with specific sensitivities. However, the Bay Area Air District does not expect pollutant levels to exceed the federal health standard. They have NOT issued a Spare the Air Alert. Officials expect Air quality will reach the moderate range. (Pioneer Publishers)
- The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved an allocation of $25,000 from the County's Livable Communities Trust to the Moraga Community Foundation for the Moraga Commons Enhancement Program. This money will be used for improvements to the Commons and West Commons park for everything from replacing restrooms to improved irrigation. The goal is to "ensure the Moraga Commons Park continues to be a vital gathering place for the community." (News 24/680)
