Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Four acres of grassland were burned in Alamo, stemming from a structure fire that destroyed one home and damaged another. The fire was reported just before 3 p.m. on Saturday and was brought under control around 5 p.m. (News 24/680)
  2. The mayor of Pleasant Hill, Michael G Harris, wants you to know about all of the fun there is to be had there on the 4th of July! Join the Firecracker Run, check out the parade and end the evening with a Party in the Park and fireworks! Check out http://www.phjuly4.com for all the details, to volunteer to help and to support this daylong event with your donations. I hear the weather is going to break just in time for some very pleasant temps this 4th! (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. Three mobile home units caught fire in Bay Point on Saturday just after 5 p.m. Northbound Bailey Road was closed due to the fire and residents were evacuated. As of 5:38 p.m. most of the fire had been extinguished. (East County Today)
  4. According to this article in Lamorinda Weekly " There will be a Lamorinda virtual community evacuation exercise on Saturday, Sept. 3, starting at 7:30 a.m. Residents can expect to begin receiving alerts about 8 a.m. Police, fire and Office of Emergency Services personnel will meet at a fire station to conduct this test of the community warning system." There are several other wildfire preparations underway for the region as well, including the Fire Adapted Community Ambassadors program where residents will come to your home to evaluate your property for fire code compliance. You can read about all of the programs at this link. (lamorindaweekly.com)
  5. During a routine traffic stop in Antioch, Officer Tom Smith noticed a rifle sitting near the feet of one of the passengers. He detained the occupants and took a look at the rifle. He determined it was a realistic-looking AR-15-style BB gun. The detainees were released and no arrests were made. From the Antioch Herald: "We want to take this time to discuss how dangerous it can be for people to display an imitation firearm in public. Besides the fact that it is against the law (Penal Code section-12556), it is very difficult to distinguish that they are not real weapons." (Antioch Herald)
