Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano has announced its largest fundraiser of the year. The annual event is called Nourish Gala Drive-in to Fight Hunger and it will take place on Thursday, May 19 at Concord's West Wind Solano Drive-in. You'll get a gourmet three-course meal and entertainment by the Golden State Warriors band followed by a showing of Back to the Future Part II. Kim Castaneda, Vice President of Development and Communications for the Food Bank, comments: "This event is an incredible chance to gather with fellow hunger fighters in our area – a night to gather in service of our neighbors in need. The funds we raise will allow the Food Bank to purchase even more fresh, whole foods, including fruits, veggies, meat and dairy products. Our goal is not to simply distribute more food, but to provide healthy meals that sustain our community." (Claycord.com)
- Antioch man, Henry Cordon, 36, was convicted of two counts of forcible sexual abuse of a child under 13 and displaying harmful material to a minor by a jury of his peers in Contra Costa Superior Court in Martinez on Wednesday. He will be sentenced on July 22 and faces a maximum of 25 years in state prison. After he is sentenced in this case, he is set to be extradited to Florida to face charges alleging he produced child pornography in 2011 with another victim. (Claycord.com)
- What's happening, Pleasant Hill? Your mayor is weighing in on exactly that. Check out his list of top things to do in Pleasant Hill this summer. From food trucks to festivals, he's excited to share his take on the great things his wonderful city has to offer. He summarizes the summer this way: "If these activities are any indication, it is going to be one outstanding summer here in Pleasant Hill, where 'the livin' is easy.'" Check out his summary at this link. (Pioneer Publishers)
- In an interesting reversal of a reversal, BART is, again, requiring riders wear masks "in paid areas of the system with limited exceptions." "I strongly support requiring a mask to ride BART to keep all our riders safe," said BART Board President Rebecca Saltzman. "I'm especially concerned for our riders who are immunocompromised, people with underlying health conditions, and children under the age of five who are not yet eligible for vaccination." If you get lost in all of the changes of direction, don't feel alone. But don't fret; they have free masks available for you at all stations in case you missed the latest memo on requirements. - After announcing a $10,000 reward for information on the case of missing woman Alexis Gabe, Oakley police released a photograph and video of a person of interest in the case. "We stand a better chance of finding Alexis because of all the help we have received. In addition to locating Alexis, maintaining the integrity of the case has been one of our highest priorities," explained Oakley Police chief Paul Beard. "We have now reached the point that is beyond frustrating to all of us." He is asking for more help from the public.
