Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Several Contra Costa cities, including Concord, are teaming up in a lawsuit against Monsanto that stems from contamination nearly a century ago. The lawsuit alleges that Monsanto was aware of health concerns with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), yet, even after a ban on the chemicals, "the area continued to face pollution from the chemical via spills and abandoned areas." (danvillesanramon.com)
- A suspect was arrested in the attack on a person at the Richmond BART station on January 2. Forty-five-year-old Daniel Jamin Nettles Sr. was arrested at a home in Martinez in connection with the case. He was identified using surveillance video and was booked into the Martinez Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder. (Claycord.com)
- The Orinda BART station will close over Presidents' weekend for needed track repairs. According to the transit company, "Rail workers will be replacing about 7,200 feet of trackways between the Rockridge, Orinda and Lafayette stations until regular service reopens on Feb. 21." BART will provide a free direct bus during the weekend closure. (San Francisco Chronicle via MSN)
- Vandalism in Pleasant Hill parks increased over the past few months, and police are asking for your help. "The vandalisms have included graffiti and damage to playground equipment. Pleasant Oaks Park and Sherman Acres Park have endured damages and clean up fees exceeding $15,000!" Police are asking parents to keep an extra eye out and ask their kids not to "hang out" in the parks before and after school. (Claycord.com)
- Have you seen the new rabbit mural in downtown Concord? It represents the Year of the Rabbit. Oakland artist Emily Ding led the effort to decorate the wall of the Brenden Theater garage. (Pioneer Publishers)
