Concord Police Release Details About Sunvalley Mall Incident
UPDATED: The mall was evacuated and closed to the public for more than two hours Wednesday when security reported a man with a possible gun.
CONCORD, CA — The Concord Police Department released more information about an incident Wednesday that prompted the closure of Sunvalley Mall.
At 3:07 p.m. Wednesday, the Concord Police Department in a Twitter post said there was police activity at the mall and that officers were responding.
"Please avoid the area of the mall for now while officers investigate," police said.

At 5:15 p.m., Concord police announced the investigation had concluded and the mall was reopened but did not provide details.
In a statement released late Wednesday night, Concord police said that a 2:45 p.m. the police department received a call from security at the mall about a man on the upper level near JCPenney who was acting strangely and had a small duffel bag.

Security told police the man mentioned he had a gun and would use it if approached, although no gun was seen.
Officers responded and evacuated the mall with the assistance of mall security.
Meanwhile, CPD Officers and Contra Costa County Sheriff's deputies established "containment" of the man. Officers maintained visual contact with the man, who remained stationary.
After the mall was cleared of customers, police used a drone to fly inside the mall and verbally communicate with the man.
Around 4:45 p.m., the man was taken into custody without incident and the mall was reopened a short time later.
Officers did not find a gun or any other weapon, and the investigation was ongoing.
