Raley’s Shutters Contra Costa Store Amid Wider Bay Area Move

CONTRA COSTA, CA — The Raley’s Companies will close three stores in California and Nevada between November and January, including a Contra Costa supermarket — the second one in the county this year.

The West Sacramento-based grocery company will close its Brentwood store Nov. 3, followed by its Elko, Nevada, store Dec. 8 and its Petaluma store Jan. 26, the company confirmed to The Shelby Report.

A fourth store, a Nob Hill Foods in Los Gatos, will close in June 2027 under a decision announced earlier this year.

The company operates about 235 stores in seven states and four Tribal Nations under banners including Raley’s, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Raley’s O-N-E Market, Bashas’, and Food City.

"A variety of factors contributed to these store closures, including local market conditions and the long-term financial sustainability of these locations,”Chelsea Carbahal, spokeswoman for The Raley’s Companies, told The Shelby Report.

“We continually evaluate where we can best invest to serve our communities, support our team members, and strengthen our business.”

Carbahal denied that the closures are part of a larger downsizing effort. But, unlike Kroger or Albertsons, Raley’s is not required to disclose store-level financial performance or detailed quarterly financial results.

The Brentwood store on Sand Creek Road has served the community for 24 years, according to Contra Costa News.

The Petaluma store employs 48 workers, according to The Press Democrat, which reported that Raley’s plans to offer transfer opportunities to “as many affected employees as possible.”

The Elko store has operated for nearly 40 years and employs more than 40 people, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.

The Los Gatos Nob Hill Foods has operated for nearly 56 years at Los Gatos Boulevard and Blossom Hill Road.

Raley’s decided not to renew the store’s lease, which expires in 2027, after reviewing its performance and current economic conditions, according to the Los Gatan.

The latest closures follow three others earlier this year.

Raley’s closed its Roseville store in January and its Antioch store in April, according to Contra Costa News.

The company closed its Nob Hill Foods in Mountain View on May 29, affecting 50 employees, according to TheStreet.

In the meantime, Raley’s broke ground in June on a 40,000-square-foot Raley’s O-N-E Market at Riverwalk at Riverstone, a master-planned community in Madera.

The store will anchor a 61,000-square-foot retail expansion and become the company’s second location in Madera County.

Raley’s opened its first store in Placerville in 1935 and formed The Raley’s Companies in 2021 after acquiring the Bashas’ Family of Stores.
