Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) announced the availability of a toll-free hotline for use by residents to immediately reach their local law enforcement non-emergency phone lines to report illegal fireworks use in their areas. The illegal fireworks reporting phone number is 1-833-885-2021. The line features a voice menu that allows residents to quickly reach the correct law enforcement number for their location by entering the first three letters of their city's name. It also allows the selection of "unincorporated area" as their location, connecting the caller to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. (Concord Patch)
- Concord's own Chef David Jacobson has won the $15,000 grand prize a national contest sponsored by Real California Milk. His "Gold Rush Pizza" featured copious amounts of cheese, including some you may have heard of like mozzarella as well as multiple specialty California cheeses. He topped all of that creamy goodness with fingerling potatoes, pancetta and smoked sea salt. YUM! (PerishableNews)
- The much-anticipated consolidation of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) and the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District became official on Friday. The move brings 128,000 residents of East Contra Costa under the purview of the larger district. It is expected to improve and streamline service. The district now serves 753,000 county residents. A ceremony marking the transfer of command was held at 10 a.m. Friday at Brentwood City Park. "Today marks our arrival at the finish line of a pursuit for improved fire and emergency services that has been years in the making," Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Chief Lewis Broschard said in a statement. - The East Bay Regional Parks are expecting blowout attendance this 4th of July weekend. If you were considering spending the weekend in a regional park campground, it's too late to get a space. All campsites have been booked in advance. A day trip is still a possibility, though, and lots of folks are expecting to do just that. On July Fourth, all picnic areas will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Pioneer has some tips to help you make the most of the experience. (Pioneer Publishers)
- From the Contra Costa County Assessor's Office: "The 2022-2023 Assessment Roll has been delivered to the County Auditor, as required by law. The increase to the local tax base for 2022-2023 is over $18.21 billion. This represents a 7.79% increase in assessed value and brings the total net local assessment roll to nearly $251.71 billion. The 2022-2023 assessment roll is the highest to date in Contra Costa County's history. Cities with the largest increases in assessed value from the prior year include Oakley with a 16.48% increase, Pittsburg with a 12.35% increase, and Brentwood with a 9.23% increase. San Ramon and Hercules saw the lowest assessed value increases ― San Ramon at 5.98% and Hercules at 5.12%." Yep. Along with that increase in property value, unfortunately, comes an increase in taxes. Thank goodness for Prop 13! (News 24/680)
