Robber Returns Stolen Money To East Bay Bank: Police

The man also tried to grab an officer's service weapon, police said.

ANTIOCH, CA — A man who robbed an East Bay bank but then returned the money almost immediately faces several charges, according to police.

Gerald Anthony Oretger, 41, of Pittsburg, was arrested on suspicion of robbery, first-degree burglary, attempting to remove a gun from an officer and battery on an officer, police said.

Officers responded around 6 p.m. Monday to a robbery in progress at a U.S. Bank in a Raley’s supermarket in the 3600 block of Lone Tree Way in Antioch, police said.

Oretger entered the bank and passed a note to a teller demanding money, according to police. The teller complied and provided cash, and Oretger left but returned shortly afterward and voluntarily gave the money back, police said, adding that a security guard detained him.

When officers arrived and tried to take Oretger into custody, he started hitting, spitting on and kicking them, and attempted to grab an officer’s service weapon, police said. He was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before booking, according to police, who said no one else was seriously injured.
