Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- An early morning house fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on Rock Creek Way in Concord. The blaze took about 2 hours to fully extinguish. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. (Claycord.com)
- The intersection of N Main and Treat Blvd in Walnut Creek was briefly shut down on Saturday as police tried to negotiate with an unhoused individual to drop a weapon he was allegedly brandishing. "Witnesses said the unidentified man had brandished a knife and was scraping it on the sidewalk, yelling something unintelligible as police approached." Eventually, the officers were able to place the man under arrest without further incident and no injuries were reported. (News 24/680)
- Per the Contra Costa Herald "as of Thursday, Oct. 21 the government-imposed restrictions from COVID-19 have completely ended in Contra Costa County." Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Ori Tzvieli officially issued the order. "Orders that (1) prohibited or otherwise restricted the activities of any person in Contra Costa County, either directly or indirectly, or (2) imposed any affirmative obligations on any person in the County, and (3) are or may be interpreted to be operative (collectively, the "Active Orders"), be rescinded." (Contra Costa Herald)
- Have you seen all of the beautiful utility boxes around Orinda? Beautify Orinda is working to make the usually-drab boxes pop with artwork from local citizens. Check out some of the treasures in this article from The Orinda News.
- File this one under "dumb criminals." San Ramon police pulled over a van early Thursday morning for expired registration. Inside, they found evidence that the three in the van were, in fact, catalytic converter thieves. "During a probation search, officers located a floor jack and a reciprocating saw, or sawzall with a metal blade, on the rear passenger floorboard along with a cut catalytic converter concealed in the back of the vehicle." I bet they get that registration done on time from now on. (danvillesanramon.com)
Patch deal of the day:
Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don't need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
