Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. California expanded its mortgage relief program this month to offer support to those who are still falling behind on their payments as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, officials announced. In Contra Costa County, for a household of five people, the area median income is $231,350. If an applicant's household income is at or below that amount, they may be eligible for funding. Concord, residents can calculate their area's median income by using the program's AMI Calculator here. (Concord Patch)
  2. Don't have your Clipper Card, yet? Wait! Before you order an old-school plastic one, if you opt to get the digital one for your phone, you could save $3. The cards usually cost $3 but the mobile option via Apple Pay or Google Pay is free due to current delivery delays and supply chain issues with the physical cards, according to the MTC. More details about the cards are available at clippercard.com. (Claycord.com)
  3. The Clayton Business & Community Association (CBCA) BBQ Cook-off will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10, in downtown Clayton. This homegrown favorite has been delighting Clayton residents since it started as a group of neighborhood enthusiasts in the parking lot of the Clayton Club Saloon. It has since grown to be sanctioned by the worldwide Kansas City BBQ Society. "This year's festival will feature a four-meat competition (chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder and brisket), with more than 40 BBQ Masters and backyard chefs facing off to take home more than $10,000 in prize money," according to The Pioneer. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Contra Costa Fire Protection Chief Brian Helmick provides a final "State of the District" update as we enter into the last days of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD), ahead of the anticipated annexation with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CCCFPD), scheduled for July 1. In this article he discusses "some of the tangible highlights that the community will be able to see post annexation." (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. A fire in a condominium unit at a complex in the 5000 block of Valley Crest Drive in Concord forced evacuations on Tuesday, but no injuries were reported. Crews worked to vent the roofline after the blaze reportedly worked its way into the attic. (News 24/680)

From my notebook:

  • Check out this aerial view of the Sunvalley Mall from the 1960s from the Claycord Online Museum! Next door is a big grassy space that is The Willows Shopping Center today!
  • As vegetation begins to dry out, it's a good time to focus on fire defense. The Pioneer expert Scott Denslow reminds us to clear away all combustible materials from at least 30 feet from your home. Check for frayed cords inside and clean the stove, oven and vents to avoid fires in the home and make sure you have an extinguisher handy. (Pioneer Publishers)
  • If you are a film or video student or interested in learning about video production, the Pleasant Hill City Channel is looking for volunteers to assist with video production. Contact Larry Hunt at larrylogic@gmail.com for more details.
