Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. In December 2019, Save Mount Diablo and the Concord Mt. Diablo Trail Ride Association (CMDTRA) signed a two-year option agreement, giving Save Mount Diablo time to raise over $1.04 million to permanently protect almost 154 acres of open space on Mount Diablo’s North Peak with a conservation easement. Save Mount Diablo raised the necessary funds. And on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, the parties closed escrow, with Save Mount Diablo successfully purchasing the conservation easement and thereby forever protecting this highly strategic land. (East County Today)
  2. Contra Costa Health Services unveiled a new initiative Wednesday to serve people experiencing mental health crises. Entitled “Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime” (A3) The service will be accessed through 911 and the Miles Hall Community Crisis Hub. A3, developed in partnership with local government, first responders, mental health advocates, patients and families, will be implemented with funds from Contra Costa County’s Measure X sales tax. The program is intended to connect people in crisis with the care they need in the moment, and reduce intervention by local law enforcement where clinical expertise is more appropriate. (Contra Costa Herald)
  3. Just after 5:00 pm Tuesday, Costa Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a male dancing in the middle of Highway 4 near Hillcrest in Antioch. The male drove in reverse and continued to get in and out of the vehicle as he danced. He continued eastbound from Hillcrest to Sand Creek Road where he then was dancing naked in the freeway where Battalion 5 reported he was in the center divide doing “the worm." (A naked man doing the worm? Seriously? You couldn't make this stuff up.) He was finally taken into custody by CHP after the family were able to arrive on scene and talk him down without police intervention. He was then transported by AMR to a local hospital. (East County Today)
  4. District 4 Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, who represents Pleasant Hill and much of Walnut Creek and Concord, is the new chairperson of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, replacing District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis. Mitchoff was able to ascend to the top spot Tuesday after vice chairperson and District 5 Supervisor Federal Glover stepped aside. Glover remains vice chairperson. "It was his turn to be chair and he very graciously agreed to serve again as vice chair so I could be chair in my last year of public service," Mitchoff said after both retook their oath of office. (Bay City News)
  5. A credit card fraud alert led to the arrest of two alleged purse thieves Saturday in Walnut Creek not long after the theft occurred in Danville. The victim placed a hold on her credit cards and provided a description of a suspect and the suspect’s vehicle to Danville officers, who were with the victim when she received a fraud alert message that some of her credit cards were being used at Nordstrom in Walnut Creek. Danville officers alerted the Walnut Creek Police Department, whose officers were able to detain two suspects inside Nordstrom. Danville police later made the arrest. (Claycord.com)
