Search Continues For Woman In East Bay Waterway: Report

CONTRA COSTA, CA — A police officer rescued a woman from the a river Wednesday evening, but a second swimmer, 54, remains missing today after a strong current caught both women near the Antioch Marina.

Police responded shortly after 6 p.m. to reports of two women in distress behind Smith’s Landing Seafood Grill. An officer entered the water on a personal watercraft, reached one woman, and brought her to safety, according to reports.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit joined the search for the second woman by water and air, according to news reports.

Police said investigators do not suspect foul play. Authorities were still working to confirm the missing woman’s identity. Friends of the women told KTVU that both women are homeless.
