Seeno Development Controversy + Cannabis Sales + 50th Reunion!
The latest from Concord, delivered right to your inbox.
Good day, people of Concord! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Concord Daily.
First, today's weather:
Patchy morning fog; cooler. High: 78 Low: 57.
Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Many were surprised at the Concord City Council's decision last month to enter into an exclusive negotiation agreement with Seeno companies for development of the former Concord Naval Weapons station. Seeno is a notorious name in the region and, many say, for good reason, having a history of playing hardball with local governments and environmental groups and running rough shod over the rules, according to former council member Colleen Coll. Now, there is a petition circulating urging the council to revisit its 3-2 vote. Meanwhile, a member of the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County has written a resolution formally opposing the council's decision and asked the party to throw its political weight behind a formal protest. They'll have to act fast, though, Concord Economic Development Director Guy Bjerke said his goal is to finish negotiations by late October. (Benicia Independent)
- Today, the Walnut Creek City Council will consider allowing non-medical cannabis businesses to operate within the city. According to a staff report for today's meeting, 70 percent of cannabis use is recreational and taxable, with the rest being medicinal (which isn't taxable). So, a sizable chunk of change could come the city's way if the council revisits this ordinance to allow non-medical sales. Right now, people just have to bop over to Concord or Antioch to get their recreational cannabis, taking their recreational dollars with them. The report also says there is demand of 10 - 12 more retail locations in the county. City staff will present options to the council, including no change to the current regulations, modifying them to allow limited retail recreational sales, expanding regulations to allow more than two storefront retailers and delivery businesses, and expanding rules to include cultivation, manufacturing, and other uses. - The Antioch Police responded to the home of Antioch City Councilwoman Tamisha Torres-Walker on Saturday after neighbors reported shots being fired. Around the same time, police confirmed, their shot spotter picked up 7 rounds fired in the same location. When police arrived, they found 7 shell casings and an inebriated, uncooperative homeowner - Tamisha Torres-Walker. At 1:35 am, police received a second call stating the person responsible for the earlier shooting returned and went inside the home. Police were unable to make contact to investigate the shooting. - The Contra Costa Clerk-Recorder-Elections Facility was dedicated as the Stephen L. Weir Building on Monday. Weir was county clerk-recorder and registrar of voters for over two decades. He was first to implement e-commerce, offer credit card payments, use digital imaging for public records, and he also commissioned the current building which opened to the public in 2007. - On Saturday, Oct. 2, the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission announced the Statewide Database's release of two free-to-use tools to help Californians submit redistricting plans to the Commission. These are the only redistricting applications through which users can submit their input directly to the state of California's official redistricting process. (Contra Costa Herald)
