- The Contra Costa County Librarian's message for July is all about audio books and how to use the Libby app from the library to "check out" books to listen to. "The digital library includes eBooks and eAudiobooks for children, teens and adults. You can find all the bestsellers including mysteries, biographies, romance, science fiction, history, self-help and much more. Here's a list of some of my recent favorite audiobooks from Libby." (Concord Patch)
- A 9-year-old boy injured in a train collision last month in unincorporated Contra Costa County has died, authorities said Wednesday. Julien Nieves, of Dixon, died June 29 at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Office. Julien was one of five people in a car that was hit by an Amtrak train about 1 p.m. June 26 on train tracks in the 3000 block of Orwood Road, near Brentwood. (Patch)
- Check out this gusher at Arnold Industrial Way and Solano Avenue in Concord Thursday morning! It seems a slight miscalculation by a driver of a Mercedes turned the fire hydrant into a spectacular water feature! I wonder if the city will keep it? It beats spending $125,000 to install one! (News 24/680)
- Lots of great venues in and around Concord made the Diablo Magazine Best of the East Bay list for Arts and Leisure! For instance, The Orinda Theater won for best movie theater, Lafayette's art and wine festival took top spot for festivals and Concord's own Solo Opera won for best performing arts company. See who else took honors in this article from Diablo Magazine. (Diablo Magazine)
- On Tuesday, Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton announced that Deputy District Attorney Aron DeFerrari is the 2021 Outstanding Prosecutor of the Year. The Outstanding Prosecutor Award is given to attorneys who achieve excellence on complex and challenging cases throughout their careers. "In the pandemic year, Aron DeFerrari faced challenges in and out of the courtroom," DA Becton said. "Despite COVID restrictions, Aron spent 103 days prosecuting three separate homicide trials against a total of five defendants. Most impressively, he convicted all five men of murder." Are you a Concord resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
