Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Orinda resident Sen. Steve Glazer, 7th District, is one of several to help raise mental health awareness with measure SB 21, which passed the Senate floor unanimously Jan. 26. If approved and signed into law by the Governor in June, the bill would "require the State Department of Education to sponsor the mental health awareness license plate program through the DMV, and the DMV would make the plates available to purchase," as stated in a press release from Glazer's office. Funds raised for these license plates would go to the California Department of Education, earmarked for youth mental health. (The Orinda News)
- Pleasant Hill police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a vehicle believed to have crashed into multiple garages on Thursday evening. Cameras have caught a gray or silver Volkswagen Jetta with temporary license plates. This incident occurred at 11 p.m. in the Gregory Gardens area. Authorities suspect it is the same vehicle that crashed into a Safeway store in Clayton earlier this week. Anyone who recognizes the car is asked to contact the Pleasant Hill police. (Concord News Journal)
- On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council directed staff to audit its permit list on recreation vehicle storage on residential properties while also temporarily suspending citations for those without permits. The staff report said that under its current program, they have 947 registered vehicles that have been grandfathered in since 2008. Staff has never audited their list to determine of the 947 registered vehicles, how many are still active or valid. The move came after city staff received more than 300 complaints for recreational vehicles. During the meeting, staff provided three options including allowing recreational vehicle parking, expanding its current registration process or taking no action and to continuing the current process. - The house owned by the Antioch Unified School District, located at 6600 Deer Valley Road south of Dozier-Libbey Medical High School and southeast of the Antioch Kaiser Medical Center, will be torn down after years of sitting vacant and being "terribly vandalized" according to AUSD Superintendent Stephanie Anello. The board voted to demolish it. (Antioch Herald)
- The San Ramon Police Department notified residents on social media Wednesday to be on the lookout for scam calls impersonating SRPD's phone number, following several reports that day. "Several community members received calls today in which the phone number displayed was our main number (925-973-2700)," SRPD said in a Facebook post. "The caller identified themselves as an officer with our agency and told the individual who answered that they hadn't responded to a subpoena or that they had a warrant for their arrest." The caller would tell residents that they had a fine that needed to be paid "immediately." Department officials added that SRPD would never contact residents by phone regarding outstanding fines, warrants, or requests for payment. (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required)
