Suspect Shot, Killed By Concord PD Was Wielding Garden Shears: Police

CONCORD, CA – Two Concord police officers who shot and killed a stabbing suspect Tuesday did so after the man attacked a police dog with garden shears and then turned on the officers, police said.

The suspect, a man in his 30s whose name has not been released, allegedly stabbed another man at about 2 p.m. in the 2900 block of Crawford Street and then fled on foot, according to police.

He was soon spotted running shirtless through nearby backyards.

Within minutes, officers found him hiding in a shed behind a house in the 1400 block of San Jose Avenue near Prospect Street, just a block from the Concord BART station.

As the officers entered the yard, the man came out of the shed and allegedly stabbed and beat the police dog, Jelle, with large garden shears, police said.

He then turned and advanced toward the officers, who opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times, according to Concord police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Blakely.

The suspect was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he died, according to police.

The victim of the stabbing on Crawford Street, who was attacked with some kind of weapon other than shears, was taken to a hospital with severe injuries but is expected to survive, police said.

The police dog Jelle is also expected to recover.

The two officers who shot the man both had more than 10 years of experience with the Police Department, Blakely said.
