Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. BART plans to launch a pilot program later this year to test the viability of a global transit pass compatible with every public transit agency in the Bay Area. "The objective will be to demonstrate the degree to which a product like this can promote greater ridership and meet the needs of riders, institutions and agencies," Financial Planning Director Michael Eiseman told the BART Board of Directors Thursday. Students at San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, the University of California at Berkeley and Santa Rosa Junior College as well as residents of at least three housing developments run by MidPen Housing will be the first to pilot the program. 2. The city of Concord joined with Street Smarts Diablo, a bicycle and pedestrian safety program, to create a temporary bike lane along Pine Hollow Road between Pine Hollow Middle School and Highlands Elementary School. "Concord is an incredibly dangerous place to walk on the street or ride a bike," said Erik Owens, a volunteer at Bike Concord. "We had some school children come by and say they're so glad we're putting up a bike lane," said Winnie Chung, Concord's transportation program manager. (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. Let's see, turned off the lights? Check. Packed the phone charger? Check. Got Fluffy a dog sitter? Check. There's one more thing you need to take care of before you head off for your summer vacation. Give blood. When schools let out for summer and families set off on vacation, the American Red Cross typically sees a decline in donors. Make sure the Red Cross can keep helping those in need by giving blood today. In thanks for helping boost the blood supply, all who give through May 19 will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice and will also be automatically entered to win a travel trailer camper that sleeps eight. Details are available at rcblood.org/camper . Check out this Pioneer Publishers link to find the upcoming opportunities for blood donation in Contra Costa County. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is one of numerous California law enforcement agencies that recently donated unused and expired safety equipment to Ukraine. The Contra Costa Office alone donated over 60 pieces of gear. "We are pleased to be able to offer this protective equipment, which would have been disposed [of]," said Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston. (News 24/680)
  5. Investigators have located the cell phone case of Alexis Gabe, the Oakley resident who's been missing since January. It was discovered in Antioch and it has been submitted to the crime lab for further analysis. (Contra Costa Herald)
