Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. A woman took her lunch break to get her car washed at Autopia Car Wash in Concord. She had to get a taxi back to work, I guess, because the car wash attendant handed her keys to a random stranger who drove away in it. The woman watched him go with nothing she could do about it. She now has to get a brand new car and she said insurance isn't going to pay much on it. Hopefully, the folks at Autopia are now looking a little more closely at who they hand car keys to. (iHeart)
  2. This morning, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will discuss putting in place an oversight committee for the County Sheriff's Office. AB1185, which went into effect in January of 2021 authorized the county to create an oversight board, but the board must approve it or it must go to a public vote, per the law. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meets at 9 a.m. today at the board chamber at the county administration building, at 1025 Escobar Street in Martinez. The meeting can be viewed at www.contracosta.ca.gov or at https://cccounty-us.zoom.us/j/87344719204. (Claycord.com)
  3. An altercation at a home in the 300 Block of Allen Way in Benicia at about 9:49 p.m. Sunday resulted in one victim being taken to the hospital in critical condition. The victim reportedly responded to a text from a woman who was with the perpetrator. The woman wanted the victim to pick her up. When the 18-year-old victim arrived, the victim and the suspect began arguing and the suspect then allegedly stabbed the victim. According to News 24/680, "the suspect, 19, was later arrested and booked into the Solano County jail for assault with deadly weapon and attempted murder and the weapon was recovered and seized." (News 24/680)
  4. Toys R Us is coming to Walnut Creek! It will be located inside the Macy's at Broadway Plaza. All Macy's will have a Toys R Us by the holiday season, the company announced. As of August 5, there were 21 locations open in California, including in Walnut Creek. (East County Today)
  5. On August 15, the Pittsburg City Council is set to vote on a gun buyback program for the city hosted by the Pittsburg Police Department. According to East County Today "the program will pay $50 for non-operable guns, $100 for handguns/rifles/shotguns, and $200 for assault rifles and ghost guns. The funding all located by the City Council will be used to purchase gift cards from local businesses that will be provided to residents during the event." All firearms collected will be destroyed.
