Understanding Senior Living in Contra Costa County

Senior living is a type of housing for older adults that includes medical and non-medical care. The most common type of senior living is called assisted living, or residential care with non-medical assistance. The other categories include: Skilled Nursing, Independent Living, Memory Care, Board and Care Homes, Active Adult Living, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (or Life Care Communities). While Skilled Nursing facilities provide medical care, Memory Care is focused on non-medical assistance for seniors with Alzheimer’s or other Dementia related diseases. Independent Living and Active Adult Living are retirement communities that cater to older adults who are looking for a maintenance free and social lifestyle. CCRCs are meant to allow residents to age in place with independent options all the way to skilled nursing options. Board and Care Homes provide similar services to Assisted Living communities, but in a homelike setting.

Assisted living, board and care homes, memory care, and CCRCs are all licensed by the State of California’s Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing. In Contra Costa country there are about 500 licensed properties.
