Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. At its August 23 meeting, the Concord City Council announced a recruitment for the Concord/Pleasant Hill Health Care District Grant Committee to fill two unscheduled vacancies for terms ending June 30, 2023 and another vacancy for a term ending June 30, 2025. The deadline for applications to the City Clerk for these positions is Friday, September 23 at 5 p.m. Applications are available on the city's website at www.cityofconcord.org/BCApplications. (Concord Patch)
  2. The Walnut Creek fire station on Hawthorne Drive is reopening on Monday Aug. 29. It will staff both firefighting and emergency medical services. Community members are invited to a reopening ceremony on August 29 at 11 a.m. at the fire station or to watch it live streamed on their Facebook page. (Claycord.com)
  3. White Pony Express in Pleasant Hill is garnering more national attention. Congressman and vice chairman of the House Hunger Caucus, Jim McGovern came all the way from Massachusetts to check out the operation, to see if it is something that is nationally applicable. White Pony Express is different than most food banks because it rescues, cleans and repackages perishable items like fruits, vegetables and dairy products, for quick turn to communities that need it. "Throwing away good food is a sin," McGovern said. "You're making sure we're not throwing away good food. You're making sure we're re-capturing food. You're getting to people in need. One of the things we're trying to tell people, by doing that, you're making your community healthier." (Claycord.com)
  4. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the Pleasant Hill annual Community Service Day is back in 2022! According to Mayor Michael G Harris, "the event begins on September 24 at 7:30-9 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Park with registration and a pancake breakfast provided by the Lion's Club. The first 500 volunteers will also get free t-shirts. Then enjoy working together on projects that will improve the quality of life in our city." You'll have more than 20 projects to choose from. You can register on the city website at www.pleasanthillca.org/volunteer. If you or your organization has a project you would like to submit, you are encouraged to do so. The deadline for submission is September 15. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. On August 25, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office filed one felony count of possession of child pornography against 33-year-old Andrew Oliver Kallick. At the time of his arrest, on August 9, Kallick was employed at an elementary school as a campus supervisor. Anyone with information about this case should contact Senior Inspector Darryl Holcombe at 925-957-8757. (News 24/680)

Also, many of the town's streets were named after the Rheem family, their friends or business associates. You can find out more about Moraga street name origins in this article from lamorindaweekly.com. (lamorindaweekly.com)
