Here are the top four stories in Concord today:

  1. Wait. They did zucchini races at the Walnut Creek Farmers Market? That sounds like so much fun! I guess lots of people thought so, because it was so popular The Pioneer thinks it's sure to become an annual event. "A total of 32 zucchinis of all shapes and sizes, decked out in a variety of eye-catching styles and designs, rolled out of the market's pit stop tent July 30 to see which had the chops to survive the slope of the homeland four-lane track." The Pioneer also noted "The competition was not for the faint of heart though. Action – fast and furious – saw collisions down the track and pile ups in the netting just beyond the yellow finish line." I hope they do it again! I wanna see that! (Pioneer Publishers)
  2. Contra Costa has another Rolex robbery to add to the list, this time in Danville at the Livery Shopping Center. The perps accosted two shoppers, pistol whipping one of them. The extent of the victim's injuries were not immediately known. Luckily, there was not more carnage as one of the three assailants fired a shot at one of the witnesses, but nobody was hurt, thankfully. (News 24/680)
  3. Freedom High School senior Presley Miller is just back from Tanzania! If that's not impressive enough, she was there as part of FutureDocs Abroad for high school and undergraduate students who aspire to a career in the medical field. According to the Contra Costa Herald "the purpose of this internship is to honor, inspire, motivate, and direct the top students in the country, to stay true to their dream and, after the program, to provide a path, plan, and resources to help them reach their goal." "It was exciting to be able to personally experience international medicine and learn the culture of Tanzania, while creating lifelong friendships and memories!" said Miller. "It was an experience of a lifetime." Good for you, Presley! And good for all of us that young people like Presley are here to make our future bright. (Contra Costa Times)
  4. Running a marathon is quite a goal. Running your first marathon with an eye to finishing in the top three is kind of a pipe dream. Or is it? Monte Vista High School graduate Brooke Starn set that goal, and smashed it, winning the women's race at the hilly San Francisco Marathon for her first try at the distance. She's pretty impressive in her academic career, as well, with a Harvard degree under her belt and admittance to med school at NYU. She says running will always be part of her life, though, and eventually she'd like to try running the New York and Boston marathons. Running "runs" in her family. Her mom has run Boston three times. The City of Concord will join the event to highlight its job opportunities; and other employers will include Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), Southwest Airlines, Amazon.com, Umpqua Bank, the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Behavior Treatment & Analysis, and many more. If you would like to attend, please register through this link: https://bit.ly/MIJobfair
  • Concord's annual Live Strong Health Expo will return to the Concord Senior Center on Friday, September 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include more than 40 vendors who offer health and human services in Concord and around Contra Costa County. Attend this free event to receive complimentary health screenings and presentations on a variety of health-related topics. Concord Senior Center serves seniors in the area at 2727 Parkside Cir., Concord, CA.
  • This is a cool shot of a vista point on Mt Diablo, but it's not the view that makes it so cool (though the view is amazing). It's the cars. You tell me, but it looks like maybe they are cars from the 50's? The photographer worked for the Oakland Tribune and the Contra Costa Times from the 30's through the 70's, so I could be off by a decade, or so.
