Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- A Concord woman has been arrested in a crash that killed a pedestrian early Saturday morning in Walnut Creek. The driver, Briana Day, was arrested for "Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated." The crash took the life of one of the victims and sent another to the hospital with major injuries. - The Apple Store on S. Main Street in Walnut Creek was hit on Saturday morning in a "blitz" type robbery. The thieves were caught a few hours later in Los Gatos by an astute Los Gatos police officer who noticed the car that had gone out on an alert shortly after the theft was reported. News 24/680 reports "officers searching the vehicle found two loaded firearms – one an illegally manufactured "ghost gun" along with a 30-round extended magazine, according to police. The car's occupants were arrested for their involvement in the theft as well as for illegal possession of firearms." (News 24/680)
- Cornerstone Christian School in Antioch has its first graduate to attend college on a full football scholarship. "Big Country" Matthew Broad accepted an offer from Northwestern about a month ago. "It happened pretty fast," Broad said. During the signing ceremony inside the school's gymnasium where his number hangs on the wall, Cornerstone Christian Center Pastor Steve Miner who is a football coach for the team said "We are just thrilled. We are proud of you, Matty. You stayed here and that was the beginning." Way to go Matthew! (Antioch Herald)
- According to the Antioch Herald "on Friday night, August 19, the Antioch Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight in the area of E. 18th and A streets." Remember that driving under the influence is not just driving drunk. Any substance that impairs your ability to operate a moving vehicle is covered under the laws. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. If you've imbibed at all, Uber is your friend. (Antioch Herald)
