🌱WC City Council Considers Measure O Endorsement + Falcons Fly 4 Free

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Concord.

(Patch Media)

Hello again, everybody! It's Wednesday in Concord and I'm back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in town.Keep reading for the latest.

First, today's weather:

Blazing sunshine. High: 105 Low: 67.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Concord who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Concord Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. The Walnut Creek City Council on Tuesday considered officially endorsing Measure O - a half cent sales tax intended to fund "current and future quality of life needs." The Council has done a considerable amount of outreach over the last several months, trying to understand the needs of the citizens of Walnut Creek. Based on the results of these surveys and conversations, Measure O priorities would include "maintaining neighborhood and downtown police patrols, crime prevention programs, 911 emergency response, emergency/disaster preparedness, increasing pedestrian safety, and ensuring consistent crossing guards on school routes." In addition, it would fund initiatives regarding homelessness, senior services and after school programs. (Claycord.com)
  2. The weather is causing all kinds of issues in and around Concord. On Monday, around 3,000 PG&E customers in Pleasant Hill, Lafayette and Martinez lost power. According to the utility it was due to "the weather." No word on exactly how the weather caused the outage, but it came at a difficult time for customers taking out power to air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers with temperatures soaring. (Claycord.com)
  3. On Sunday, two inmates escaped the minimum-security Marsh Creek Detention Facility. They were sentenced for low level crimes including burglary and drug possession. After the discovery, an emergency count was done and an immediate search of the surrounding areas was performed. The inmates are still at large. They now face felony charges of escape from a county detention facility and face a potential state prison sentence. One of these guys was set to be released in January. I'm not sure what was going through his head, but he may have just traded in four months for a much longer sentence. The Contra Costa Sheriff's Dept. asks that anyone with information on their whereabouts or who might have seen them to call Sheriff's dispatch at (925) 646-2441. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. The Young Falcons Fly 4 Free program took to the skies again last week. I love this program. Several volunteers get together and let kids get the feel for flying small planes. Why? Because the volunteers love to fly and they want to give kids the chance to love to fly, too! Kids from ages 8 to 17 can participate. According to The Pioneer, "the Young Falcons program has completely booked up available sessions, so new registrations have closed for now. But the mission to take young people into the sky continues and registrations will open up again at a later date." (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. East County Today has published a rundown of everything you need to know about the extreme weather we're experiencing, including announcements about closures due to the weather and where you can cool off during the heatwave. The excessive heat warning has been extended through Thursday. We should see some cooling today, but the temps are going back up tomorrow, therefore the Heat Warnings and Advisories have been extended until Thursday at 8 p.m. (East County Today)
