Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Walnut Creek police arrested two men who were in a stolen vehicle Wednesday and returned the vehicle to its owner. Ronnie Conway, 23, and Dominic Silva, 33, both of Concord, were taken into custody. Officers were conducting a traffic enforcement near Las Lomas High School when they were alerted to a stolen vehicle. Officers found the vehicle in the vicinity of S. California and Olympic boulevards. The officers conducted a high-risk stop with the assistance of a K-9 unit. (Patch)
  2. The City of Concord, jointly with the City of Clayton, is conducting a Complete Streets Study to examine the current transportation challenges for all users along Pine Hollow Road. The goal is to develop a set of proposed improvements to enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety, auto circulation, trail connectivity, and residential and school access. As a part of the final outreach, a one-day demonstration event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27 between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Come ride the temporary pop-up bike lane on April 27 and share your feedback with the project team. 3. As retired Lt. Col. Mike Hudson prepares to emcee the city's Memorial Day service, he finds himself once again thinking about a fallen officer – this time a friend in the Ukrainian military. Lt. Col. Nick Nikonov, 37, died March 12 in Mariupol in eastern Ukraine. The two servicemen met in 2011 in Ukraine, preparing for a multi-national exercise in the Black Sea. "Basically, we searched for common training requirements that we had between his group of Naval Special Warfare operators and our Reconnaissance Marines," Hudson said. Since the war began on Feb. 24, Hudson has been working with the Marine Reconnaissance Foundation to get needed supplies to Ukrainian troops. Hudson has raised more than $9,000 through GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/b29c9ae7). (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. A messy pickup truck fire closed the eastbound Highway 24 on-ramp from Bryant Way in Orinda Wednesday. The pickup was first spotted with flames visible on the undercarriage at about 10:25 a.m. The unidentified driver made it safely from the vehicle as it continued to burn before Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District crews arrived and were able to extinguish the blaze. (News 24/680)
  5. At approximately 11:40 pm Wednesday, the Oakley Police Department responded to the downtown area on a report of a male evading bounty hunters within the city of Oakley. According to police, Larry Davis, a 43-year-old male from Sacramento, was being tracked down by bounty hunters after being wanted on multiple warrants for domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, torture and false imprisonment. Oakley Police arrived on scene and assisted in the search where they located Davis on a roof when he began jumping from roof to roof in an attempt to flee from bounty hunters and officers. After approximately 90-minutes, he was physically removed and taken into custody. (East County Today)
