Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. A power outage impacted more than 3,000 customers Friday in Clayton. The outage started at 4:18 p.m. Friday. As of 4:41 p.m., there were 3,380 were without power, according to PG&E's website. The cause of the outage is under investigation, but it appears to have happened due to a pole fire on Pine Hollow Rd. at Rolling Woods in Concord. The impacted area was along Marsh Creek Road from Kirker Pass Road to Camino Diablo. (Concord Patch)
  2. A group of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile Virus in Contra Costa County, the Contra Costa County Mosquito and Vector Control District said Friday. The mosquitoes were collected from a trap in the city of Oakley and marked the first group of mosquitoes to test positive for WNV so far this year in the county. "It is important that Contra Costa County residents take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by using an effective insect repellent when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk," said Steve Schutz, scientific program manager for the District. (Concord Patch)
  3. Several people were injured early Saturday morning in a collision on North Main Street in Walnut Creek. The crash was reported at 1:51 a.m. and shut down the street in both directions between Pringle and the N Main Street. split. Bar-goers in the area further complicated the large accident scene. The investigation into the crash was ongoing at press time. (News 24/680)
  4. A bald eagle fledgling was injured when its nest fell from a tree on ranch land adjacent to Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore in June. Thanks to efforts from ranch managers, Park District biologists and naturalists and the Lindsey Wildlife Hospital the story has a happy ending. After being nursed back to health, the eaglet was released back into the wild near its parents and sibling. It was heard calling to the parents upon release, and the next day, the eaglet was in the tree with its sibling being fed by the parents. Nice story. (News 24/680)
  5. Orinda Chef Sharon Girdlestone used her culinary talents recently to help some of the not-so-fortunate refugees from Ukraine. She travelled to the Polish-Ukrainian border to work in a commercial kitchen in Przemysl. "The chef explained she had time to go after selling her Lamorinda culinary business, My Sustainable Table, which also fed the unhoused in Concord for the last four years," according to The Orinda News. Girdlestone was there for nine days. "Even when they were coming in on the train with nothing, they were smiling," said Girdlestone. "They were grateful. Some hadn't eaten in a few days." She said the experience was moving. (theorindanews.com)
