Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Wild pigs are back on the hunt for foliage in Concord. The neighborhood first noticed damage from the feral hogs in March and now they're back again, going from home to home and feasting on the lawns and vegetation. Neighbors are being told there is nothing authorities can do and one woman who tried to hire trappers was told the area is too vast for their operation. The solution? Either get rid of your landscaping and put in drought-tolerant non-vegetation instead, or shoot the buggers - with the right permits and within local ordinances, of course. (KRON4)
- Let's remind everyone that one pill can kill. That was true for a Walnut Creek woman who bought oxycodone M30 pills from an old high school acquaintance in June of 2020. Those pills were laced with fentanyl and the woman was found dead in her bed with the pills nearby. A Pittsburg man has been sentenced in the death. Gage Pascoe, 23, was sentenced in federal court to 68 months in prison after pleading guilty in February to fentanyl distribution. Though he did not mean to cause the death, prosecutors argued he acted recklessly. That one little pill destroyed the lives of many. (Claycord.com)
- The woman who hit and killed the lifelong Lafayette bicycling advocate known as "The Legend of Mount Diablo" has been sentenced. Lori Everett will be on probation for one year and must serve 100 hours of community service, along with paying fines and taking a safe-driver course, according to Contra Costa District Attorney spokesman Ted Asregadoo. Everett struck 86-year-old Joe Shami on April 13, 2021, at the Lafayette roundabout intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard, causing his death. Shami became known as "The Legend of Mount Diablo" because he had ridden up the mountain at least once a week for 500 straight weeks. (Mercury News via MSN)
- Patricia "Pat" Behring, wife of Blackhawk developer Ken Behring, will be remembered as the First Lady of Blackhawk. Behring passed away on June 24 at the age of 93. According to danvillesanramon.com "Pat Behring supported organizations including the Veterans Memorial Museum, the John Muir Cancer Center and the Discovery Counseling Center. Pat Behring also began the Blackhawk Museum Guild, which raises funds for the Children's Education and Transportation Fund to defray field trip bus transportation costs for East Bay students to experience the museum, provide docent training for tours, sponsor select exhibitions, and present weekend family hands-on programs." She will truly be missed. (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required)
- On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council in a 3-2 split decision, approved a Rent Stabilization Ordinance, with Mayor Pro Tem Mike Barbanica and councilmember Lori Ogorchock dissenting. This ordinance caps rent increases at 60% of CPI or 3%, whichever is less. More than 65 people showed up offering more than two hours of public comments urging support for the ordinance. Barbanica and Ogorchock argued for alternate plans, but ultimately were outvoted in favor of the 60%/3% ordinance. (East County Today)
