Willow Fire Blackens 70 Acres Near Concord

The two-alarm wildfire started near Willow Pass and Avila roads.

CONCORD, CA — Firefighters stopped the forward progress of a grass fire burning Wednesday north of Concord, Cal Fire announced.

As of 2:36 p.m., the Willow Fire was 70 acres and 30 percent contained.

The two-alarm blaze broke out shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday near Willow Pass Road and Avila Road.

The wildfire was being fought in joint command with Cal Fire and Contra Costa Fire. Eighty personnel, one helicopter, 12 engines, three dozers, and three hand crews were battling the blaze, which had a moderate rate of spread.

At 1:39 p.m., Cal Fire reported that 15 acres had burned. By 2:07 p.m., it had more than tripled to 50 acres, with 0 percent containment.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage or evacuations.
