📰 News we're reading

1. Coronado adopts updated granny flat laws (thecoronadonews.com) — Coronado homeowners can now legally rent granny flats and other accessory units for as little as 30 days after the City Council updated its ADU ordinance on September 1. The change, made to comply with state housing law, disappointed some council members who hoped to prioritize long-term, affordable housing but still preserves local limits like floor area ratio and some carriage-house restrictions.

2. San Diego approves new sewage system as Tijuana River crisis worsens (amedpost.com) — San Diego County supervisors have approved funding to design a new U.S.-side sewage treatment system aimed at intercepting Tijuana River pollution before it forces more beach closures, which have already stretched north to Coronado. The multi-phase plan, led by Supervisors Paloma Aguirre and Terra Lawson-Remer, faces cost concerns but is pitched as a long-overdue backup to federal and binational efforts that have failed to protect coastal communities.

3. Authors Jacqueline Friedland and Rosa Kwon Easton present books at Coronado Public Library (thecoronadonews.com) — Coronado readers can meet bestselling authors Jacqueline Friedland and Rosa Kwon Easton at a free book talk at the Coronado Public Library on October 6 at 6:30 p.m. Registration is open to everyone, with optional VIP reserved seating available by pre-ordering books that can be signed at the event.

4. Coronado Unified robotics teams kick off outreach efforts at Southeast San Diego STEM and Art Expo (coronadotimes.com) — Coronado families with budding engineers may want to know that Coronado Unified's Robotics Academy is rapidly expanding, with teams from Coronado High School already leading outreach at the Southeast San Diego STEM and Art Expo. Students showcased robots, ran hands-on activities, and highlighted how the growing program connects local kids to competitive robotics and STEM learning from elementary through high school.

5. A Border Pollution Crisis is Undermining America's Elite Warfighters (sof.news) — Navy SEAL candidates training off Coronado are repeatedly entering ocean water contaminated by sewage from the Tijuana River, with hundreds of documented illnesses and frequent test failures of state safety standards. Local leaders in Coronado, including the city council, school district, and former mayor, are lobbying, suing, and seeking emergency funding to force stronger U.S.-Mexico action, as federal agreements have yet to stop the pollution threatening residents and military readiness.
