Comic-Con Stays in San Diego. Nerds Celebrate!

Nerds, geeks and fanboys rejoice! Today was a good day as we learned that Comic-Con has agreed to stay in San Diego through 2016.

To those who have made Comic-Con a tradition, the news brought a sigh of relief
that they could start planning for their annual trips.  And to those who have never been, you will now get more opportunities to experience Comic-Con in person.

You see, as Comic-Con has exploded in growth, bursting out its home at the San
Diego Convention Center, rumors have persisted that organizers might move the
pop culture palooza out of San Diego.

There was speculation that Comic-Con would have moved to Anaheim or Las Vegas. Blasphemy, we say! Comic-Con is as San Diego as fish tacos and the flower fields. Both locations would have forever altered the unique character of Comic-Con.

Anaheim is not a city. It’s a collection of hotels. Las Vegas is a desert. You think it
was hot outside on the line to get into Hall H? Imagine waiting outside the Las
Vegas Convention Center. We’d have geeks in their stormtrooper costumes melting on the sidewalk.

One of the appeals of Comic-Con is that its location next to the Gaslamp allows for
an incredible transformation of downtown San Diego. That has been more evident
in recent years as Comic-Con has spread its programs and events outside of the
Convention Center and into nearby hotels, restaurants and clubs.

Just this year alone we had a zombie obstacle course at Petco Park; an alternative,
mini-Con at a warehouse downtown, restaurants and bars turned into video game
and TV network hubs, an elaborate recreation of the Oregon woods to promote NBC’s “Grimm” and the annual, popular zombie walk right through the Gaslamp.

It’s a scene that can’t be replicated, and shouldn’t be replicated, anywhere else.

We’re happy to have Comic-Con stay in San Diego a little longer. Now, if we can only do something about those Hall H lines.
