Try to remember what life was like in late 2008 and early 2009. The stock market had been on a gut-wrenching decline for more than 5 months. Each day seemed to continue on the same downward path. During that tumultuous season, we did our best to remain rational as our instincts and past experience suggested that the market decline would not continue forever. Companies weren't all going out of business and the US economy wasn't going to shut down. We knew that at some point we would have some up days - but when? Each morning we'd come into the office, expecting the turnaround to happen. It didn't...until March 10, 2009. Fast forward to May 2013. Is it possible that we are feeling similar about the current market, albeit in reverse? We've experienced a great run up over the past 6 months. Account values have gone up and statements are looking great. From a rational perspective, we know that it can't continue straight up forever. Each day we arrive in the office expecting the start of a decline, but it doesn't happen - YET. A correction of 5-10% is considered normal market activity. We're expecting that to happen and you should too. But does it mean you should make dramatic changes to your portfolio in anticipation of a correction? Absolutely not. In our opinion, timing the market doesn't work. We remain very positive on future growth for the stock market. The economy has made considerable positive progress since those bleak days of 2009, the housing market has markedly improved and corporations have cleaned up their balance sheets. It's just the short-term where we get concerned that stock prices might have gotten ahead of themselves. Don't fret a pullback.
