Coronado Is San Diego County's Second Trashiest City

The Equinox Center hosted a “trash talk” on Thursday to release the new regional waste data, including its annual city-by-city analysis.

Coronado and Del Mar were the only two cities in the region that generated more trash per capita than the state and county averages last year.

Coronado had an average waste disposed per person per day of 9.23 pounds, according to the Equinox Center. San Diego County averaged 5.0 pounds per person per day and the state’s average was 4.32 pounds per person per day.

“In Coronado, the military base contributes to the high rate,” explained Chris Kato, a policy analyst with the Equinox Center.

The good news is that the city had reduced its waste by 1.62 pounds per person per day from the previous year.

Only Del Mar had a higher rate in 2012 with 11.4 pounds per person per day. This figure accounts for the visitors to the Del Mar Fairgrounds’ events including the San Diego County Fair and Del Mar races.

“When we get people thinking about the data, than we can start thinking about ways to improve it,” Kato said.

On the flip side, Imperial Beach had the least trash per capita—2.84 pounds per person per day in 2012.
