Authorities said 13 people died in the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill, including a sheriff's sergeant and the hooded gunman, identified as 28-year-old former Marine Ian David Long. Long, who lived with his mother in Newbury Park, is believed to have committed suicide as law enforcement descended on the bar.
Meek, who graduated from Coronado High in 2014, was working as a bouncer at the bar and grill when the gunman opened fire. He studied criminology and criminal justice at Cal Lutheran.

Friends of Meek told reporters that he "threw a bar stool through a window" so that people trapped inside could get out.
"Meek heroically saved lives in the incident," university officials said. "Cal Lutheran wraps its arms around the Meek family and other families, and around every member of this community of caring."
Classes were canceled Thursday at Cal Lutheran. The campus community gathered in the morning at Samuelson Chapel in remembrance of the victims. Another campus gathering was slated for Thursday evening at the chapel.
