Tennis Center Dedication

The City of Coronado is excited to announce the completion of The Coronado Tennis Center. The dedication of this reconstructed recreation venue will take place on Wednesday, June 22 at 4 p.m. Community members are invited to join in this celebration. Located at 1501 Glorietta Blvd., the is sure to impress you.  The ribbon cutting includes ceremonial presentations by city officials, refreshments and tennis activities.

Designed with community feedback in mind, this reconstructed facility is more than twice its previous size and now has a new open lounge area for viewing matches or cooling down after a game, a prominently located scheduling office, an expanded pro shop, new restrooms, and a trellised patio with an outdoor barbecue available for group events.

"The new design is welcoming, with clearly designated areas for patrons to check in, view matches, or sit and relax," said Director of Recreation Services Linda Rahn. "It really is a lovely spot with a pleasant atmosphere."  The centerpiece of the structure is the indoor/outdoor lounge area, which has glass doors on three sides to bring in light and allow views of the courts. The center's eight tennis courts also received new surfacing and improved lighting for nighttime play.

Throughout the construction process, which started last July, the facility expanded its footprint from just over 1,000 square feet to 2,322 square feet. The project was completed using sustainable building practices, and earned the Green Building Council's LEED silver certification. The finished center contains a number of features that are good for the environment such as low-flush toilets, automatic lighting, a solar-reflective roof, and permeable landscaping pavers that prevent storm water from sweeping debris into storm drains.

"The whole environment has had a beautiful face-lift that will give patrons more amenities and improve their experience at the Tennis Center," Rahn said. The City of Coronado has 11 additional tennis courts, including five at the Cays, four at Coronado High School and two at the Library. All except one at the Cays are lighted for nighttime play.
