Islanders Open League Play with 35-21 Win Over UC

Denson throws three touchdown passes as Coronado improves to 4-1 overall.

Austin Denson threw three touchdown passes and Coronado High produced scores with a recovered fumble and an interception return Friday night as the Islanders opened Central League play with a 35-21 victory over visiting University City.

Denson hit Jack Perkins from 9 yards out for the only score in the first half. After UC pulled even at 7-7, Denson and Hunter Corpus connected for an 80-yard touchdown to put the Islanders up 14-7 through three quarters.

Perkins caught a 3-yard TD pass from Denson that sparked a 21-point fourth quarter for Coronado (4-1, 1-0), which also got on the board when Kyle Croll recovered a fumble in the end zone and Paul Rodriguez returned an interception 36 yards to paydirt.

That made it 35-7 before University City (2-3, 0-1) scored to late TDs to narrow the final margin.

The Islanders visit Crawford for a 5 p.m. Central League game on Friday.
